  1. This website is truly awesome. You should make the time to click on the other links and find out more about:

    1) The chronology of the war (Timeline)
    2) The legacy of the war (The Shaping of the 21st Century)
    3) Historians' varying opinions about the war (Historians)

You can write a review/reflection about what you discover, post it to the class blog and earn extra credit.

    1. 1. Europe became an entire continent at war because of different alliances within the continent. Austria-Hungry had an alliance with Germany and Serbia had alliances with Russia, great Britain, France, & eventually the U.S. These other countries joined because they had an obligation to each other.

      2. This information connects with out brainstorm from last class because we were talking about the reasons why we engage in world wars. Protection and alliances were part of these reasons. The same reasons why we ended up being a part of the great war.

      3. Why wasn't Europe a continent that had each others back? Those countries were all in the same place so why or how did there end up being so many different alliances?

  2. 1:I think Europe became an entire continent at war because everyone had their alliances that they had to stand by.
2:I think it gives another reason because i did not think about alliances being a reason for people to come in to the war.
3:How was Austria able to stand ground against Russia and Serbia while being in the middle of them?

  3. 1.) From one nation declaring war on another, allied countries got involved which lead to the entire nation fighting with itself.

2.) This was lead to the separation of many nations and a massive amount of new mini countries to be be formed, which still exist today.

3.) How's idea was it to split up the nations to such an extent? Why not unite? There are just so many countries (http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/eunewneb.gif), if anything they could follow America with a central government ruling over states.

  4. While I was looking and reading the map I wondered if Germany wanted to be a part of this war or was it because their signed loyalty to Austria-Hungary that they had to intervene in the war. I believe that the whole continent became involved in war because everyone was connected in some way with each other. And having the countries right next to each other wasn’t helping either. I think that even if no one had an alliance and only Austria-Hungary and Serbia was at war I believe that someone would have got involved because the countries are all pushed together.

  5. 1) I think Europe became an entire continent at war because of everyone’s alliances. In the beginning it was just Serbia and Austria-Hungary. However, Russia, France, Great Britain and Italy were in alliance with Serbia. While Germany, OTTOMAN EMPIRE, and Bulgaria were in alliance with Austria Germany, which basically made all of Europe at war with each other.

  6. 1. Europe became an entire continent at war because people are noisy and these freaking treaties forced them to do so. I don't understand why war had to be part of the treaty, it's not like a nation can fight on two sides. But it can have peace with both opponents but the treaty won't allow it. It's like another person's actions being treated as yours and you both have to fight to "protect" that action. It's a big puzzle. Everyone had another person's back and that got even more people included and the fact that Germany was dumb enough to want war with Belgium, "Hello, you have about 5 others to fight! What are you upset that you're in this? Well you get out not increase the amount of nations fighting."
    2. I wish I was here last class but this helps my mind widen about the negative sides of treaties and figure out how America got involved.
    3. What caused Germany to wave war on Belgium? Was there a threat that cause the United Stated to join? Why did we back out and work on home issues? What did the average person think of WWI and Uncle Sam's involvement in it? Did the people protest and ask the President to work on domestic issues instead of foreign problems? Who the heck was the President at this time? :)
I'm guessing that it is. I just want to get some answers and do some work! (lol)

  7. 1. Europe became an entire continent at war because of different alliances. Since Serbia had an alliance with Russia and Russia had alliances with France and Great Britain, they went at war with the allies of the enemy. This mad most of Europe at war except for some neutral states.
    2. This shows how politics were involved with war. This is because alliances are a part of a political agreement or in this case the treaty of on taunt or the triple alliance treaty. This made everyone pitted against each other because of agreements previously made.
    3. Did this war cause a lot of strain for the countries that were neutral in Europe?

  8. 1)Europe became an entire continent at war when Austria declared war against Serbia. As a result, a war between Austria and Serbia meant a war between Austria and Russia. This meant was between Russia and Germany and this meant war between Germany and France. This meant war between Germany and Great Britain.
2)This information connects to our brainstorm and discussion last class because this shows an example as to why places engage in war. In this case it was because of treaties and alliances.
3)My question is: Why was Europe split up like it was? Why wasn’t Europe united?

  9. 1) I think europe became a continent at war because of allyships and relationships that the nations would not break. As for the neutral countries, I feel they were pressured by their close proximity and shared borders to the battles.
    2) Immediately after we began our opening, I quickly connected to last class. As I viewed the interactive map filling in those allyships, I thought of how we had determined this to be a cause of world war.
    3) When did the US come into play? They don't seem to be included in these maps.

  10. 1. Europe became an entire continent at war because of all the treaties that had been signed between different countries that forced many of them into war with each other.

    2. This connects to last class's discussion because we were talking about the pros and cons of alliances. We can clearly see how having an alliance can actually force countries into fighting with their allies whether or not they wanted to.

    3. Im starting to wonder how ceartin american ethnic groups took this war to heart.

  11. The war initionally started between Austria Hungary and Serbia. Since Serbia had an alliance with Russia, Russia got sucked into the war. That’s when Germany got sucked in, as a result of that Britain and France entered the war.

  12. 1. Europe became an entire continent at war because they had alliances with every country in the area.
    2. This new information connect to our brainstorm and discussion from last class because this relate to politics. This is because the ally powers have treaties.

  13. 1. Europe became an entire continent at war because of the allies of the countries involved. The war originally began with Austria-Hungray and Serbia, but since Russia and Serbia were allies, Russia joined the war taking Serbia. Because Austria-Hungary was allies with Germany, Germany took the side of Austria-Hungary in the war. Later France and Great Britain joined the war on the side of Serbia because France, Great Britain, and Russia were all in alliance.

    2. I wasn't here last class.

    3. Were the allies happy to join and support the sides that they did? As a result of the war did Austria-Hungary or Serbia start new alliances with the countries that helped them in the war?

  14. Dear Ms. Blatteau,
The presentation that you played earlier was magnificent. It was nicely done and I believe that it helped everyone understand who was on whose side? How did this start? And how did this escalade?
Europe became an entire continent filled with war because two countries were fighting in the beginning, but unfortunately as time escaladed surrounding countries supported who they believed was right. This new information will help us understand what we are learning in class, and what our April Vacation Work will consist of.
Some questions that I have are:
*Why did surrounding countries choose sides?
*Why were the countries that were neutral, neutral?
*How long did this exist for?
*How does this affect the European world today?

  16. 1.Europe was a complicated mess of alliances at the begining of WW1. When two countries went two war, their respective portions of that complicated mass were pulled in after them. Some countries betrayed alliances, some joined the fight seeking retribution for past losses, and some were forced to join.
2.Several of the reasons for going to war we discussed were on display here, such as Bulgaria joining the Central Forces to get revenge on... some country in the Allied Forces.
3.Exactly how many countries were involved in this war?

  17. 1) How did Europe become an entire continent at war?
Everybody in Europe had a treaty or alliance with someone.
    2) How does this new information connect to our brainstorm and discussion last class?
I was not here last class but I would say that the alliances with other countries and treaties have a big affect on small or neutral countries because this drives people to have war. How? Because some countries go to war because they have the help of other countries
    3) Create at least one of your own questions about the new information we investigated today.
Why do countries drag other countries in there conflict?

  18. 1. Europe became an entire continent at war because of alliances and treaties.

    2. This new information connects to our brainstorm from last class because we talked about topics that lead to the Great War. The idea of alliances connects to last class because this one of the topics that was brought up.

    3. How did the Europe’s close boundaries affect the war? Did Europe’s tight borders impact countries that wanted to stay neutral?

  19. 1. Europe became an entire continent of war because of alliances. When one country or nation thought it was time to fight because of an alliance they made, another country or nation did the same thing for the opposite side, until eventually everyone's involved.

    2. This relates to our discussion from last class be- cause we were talking about why countries chose to go to war. The website told us how the continent of Europe ended up in the war.

    3. If alliances are what caused those countries to join the war, what would happen if you had alliances with multiple countries on both sides? Would some kind of special treaty be made or will you lose the alliances on the other side for good?

    1. The European continent fell into a state of war country by country, in a chain.
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne by Serbian revolutionaries, led Austria to declare war on Serbia. Because Serbia and Russia were allies, Russia joined Serbia in the war against Austria. Germany, bound by the Triple Alliance treaty to Austria was forced to engage in war against Russia. France and Britain bound by alliances to Russia entered the war against Austria. Italy eventually entered the war on the side of Russia, France, and Britain.
    2. This new information connects to our brainstorm and discussion from last class because it specifies the reasons that countries engaged in large scale conflicts with one another.
    3. Why did countries form alliances with so many other countries.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1. How did Europe become an entire continent at war?
Well, first it all started between Austria-Hungary (Central) and Serbia (Allied), when Archduke Ferdinand, the heir to the Serbian throne, was assassinated. But war would not be contained between these two powers, because of the alliances they had with other European nations. It was the alliances that forced countries to go into war, even though they were not directly involved. Germany and Austria-Hungary were allies so therefore they joined together to fight the war. Germany & Austria –Hungary became the “Central” powers. Serbia’s ally was Russia (Germany’s enemy). And Russia’s allies were France and Britain. (Eventually Italy and the US allied with them as well. So Serbia, Russia, France, Britain, Italy, and the US were all “Allied” powers. All of these countries got pulled into WWI because of their affiliation with each other. So countries like Italy and Germany weren’t necessarily enemies themselves, but because they allied with opposing powers, they became enemies to each other. (Like when someone’s friend goes out with their friend’s ex and they both become disliked!)

    2. How does this new information connect to our brainstorm and discussion last class?
This information connects to our brainstorm from last class because we discussed the pros and cons of entering the war. This information helps us to see how being allied with other nations can be so important to a country. For example, a pro of entering a war with an ally is that there is backup and no one is going solo. However, war can lead to destruction of relationships with other countries and forfeiting their possible alliance in the future. We see that much consideration much go into whether a country should take part in war, and from this information we see that alliances can have a strong influence on that.

    3. Create at least one of your own questions about the new information we investigated today.
So US entered the war why?
    What made them against Germany?
Now was the US for the British and that’s why they entered the war-to aid them?
Isn’t that crazy how in the 1770’s US was against Britain, but by the 1900’s they were allies again?
US and Britain are allies presently right?

  22. 2) The discussion question from last class was “What makes Nations engage in large scale global war?” Everyone had diverse answers whether being; control, disagreements, takeover, exposure, greed, resources, protection (for self and others), revenge, technology, competition and much more. However, looking at the map it seems to me that the FORMATION OF ALLIENCES has a lot to do with the engaging in war!

  23. Question #1: Europe became an entire continent at war because of alliances with surrounding countries most forced by treaties.
Question #2: Last class we were discussing the benefits and cost of alliances while either being neutral or involved and from this new information it shows how the treaties went into effect and how being in the treaty could be a bad thing because Germany was forced to fight alongside with Austria-Hungary.
Question #3: From observing the maps I’ve noticed that size didn’t matter because although Russia was big they couldn’t defeat Germany, but the Ottoman Empire was huge and still defeated the allies. Which raises my question how geography plays a role in the war. Were the Ottoman Empire peninsulas a reason why the Ottoman Empire was able to defeat the Allied Powers in that battle?

  24. 1. answer= Because of the alliances created between the countries, it impacted how many joined into the War.
    2. answer= This fits/connects with the disscusion from April 9th because we explained how it was difficult for countires to stay out of the war; so it explains how alliances draged many into the war eventhough they wanted to stay neutral.
    3. answer= when did the u.s and britain become allies?

  25. 1. Alliances that were going on dragged everyone into the war.

    2. It connects to the reasons countries engage in war. Many times they kinda have to, because the are bound by alliances. It goes back to the pros and cons of alliances.

    3. What was going on in the neutral countries during this time? I know Spain was in the middle of a civil war (or was that WWII?) but as for the others, what was going on in their communities, cultures and all that?
